From UH
Hawai will enjoy five weekends of home matches, capped by the Big West Championship in late April. The regular-season schedule also includes six of the seven teams that joined UH in last season’s NCAA Championship.

“We’re very excited for the 2018 schedule,” head coach Jeff Hall said. “We get to play the best teams from both the East Coast and the West Coast. There’s no doubt it will be a challenging schedule—but we’ll be more than ready and look forward to the challenge.”
The SandBows will open their season on Feb. 24 and 25 against Stanford and UCLA in the Rainbow Wahine Classic. In fact, three of the team’s first five matches of 2018 will come against the Bruins as the team’s first road trip will take them to Los Angeles to face UCLA and Loyola Marymount on March 8.

UH will remain in Southern California for the East Meets West Invitational, March 10-11, highlighted by rematches with 2017 NCAA foes LSU and Florida State. Other road matches includes UH’s first visit to Columbia, South Carolina for the Gamecock Challenge (March 24-25), as well as the third annual Big West Challenge (March 30-31), this time hosted by Sacramento State.

Defending national champion USC rolls into town for the Hawai’i Invitational (March 17-18) to compete against UH as well as Grand Canyon and Nebraska. Other teams headed to Honolulu in 2018 are Washington, Loyola Marymount, and Utah in the Queen’s Cup (April 7-8) and Arizona State and Boise State in the Senior Celebration weekend (April 14-15).
Hawai’i’s home docket concludes with the SandBows hosting the Big West Championship for the first time ever at Queen’s Beach, April 27-29. UH is the two-time defending league champion.

“We’re super stoked to host the Big West Championship,” Hall said. “Our fans will be treated to a championship atmosphere and we hope to bring home the title once again.”

The NCAA championship is set for May 4-6 in Gulf Shores, Ala., marking the seventh straight year the championship will be held in the venue. UH finished a program-best third in the country last year with a 29-7 mark.

Great schedule I think it’s great they play ucla three times they should be the favorites to win it all , so going 2-1 against them would be great.
Love that the big west tournament will be hosted by the wahine hope it is televised by spectrum.

UCLA beating OSU helps our RPI? Who else do we need to win?

  3. Warriorfan November 22, 2017 5:52 pm

Baylor to beat texas to get them a top 12 seed.
Oregon to beat oregon state to knock OSU down further in the rpi.
Ohio state to lose at home to Illinois to give them a losing season and out of contention for an at large bid.
Marquette to win the big East tournament.
Northern Iowa to win the Missouri valley tournament.
    LSU to lose at Tennesee.
Notre dame to lose at Syracuse
    Missouri to lose to Florida
Florida State to lose at Georgia Tech
NC state to lose at wake Forest
    Davis to beat Colorado State
    Ucla to beat usc
Washington state to lose to washington

Almost everything went right for hawaii today (Arizona state beating washington state would be the cherry on top)
hope for more of the same this weekend.

The wahine should be getting an at-large bid. The matches of teams with RPIs near Hawaii have gone in Hawaii’s way.
43 Kennesaw State automatic qualifier. 44 Missouri State / 48 UNI still in Conference Championship but one has to win and get the automatic qualifier and the other would lose therefore probably not improving their RPI. 45 High Point lost to 61 Radford in their conference Championship therefore Radford automatic qualifier.Again High Point unlikely to improve RPI. 50 College of Charleston Lost to 51 James Madison in their conference Championship there for James Madison automatic qualifier again College of Charleston unlikely to improve RPI. 53 Dayton no more matches 35 ECU automatic qualifier 55 Denver automatic qualifier 58 Austin Peay automatic qualifier.
Now for the “major” conferences :
40 Florida State beat to 60 Clemson, still has 115 Georgia Tech to play.
42 North Carolina State lost to 92 Duke still has number 182 Wake Forest to play butprobably will not improve past Hawaii 42 Ohio State University beat 47 Maryland. Ohio State still alive ,Maryland likely not to improve unless upsets 28 Illinois.46 Iowa lost to 28 Illinois unlikely to improve unless upsets 6 Nebraska . 49 Auburn lost to 2 Florida only has 57 Arkansas left. 56 Alabama lost to 34 Missouri only has 59 Texas A&M left. 57 Arkansas lost to 1 Kentucky only has 49 Auburn left. 59 Texas A&M losing record not eligible 60 North Carolina lost to 186 Wakeforest still has 82 Duke left.
Bonus, 38 LSU lost to 62 Georgia, still has 83 Tennessee left.
Hawaii is at 39 there are 12 conferences before 39 that would be automatic qualifiers therefore 39 – 12 equals 27 at-large bids used up 32 total at-large bids 32-27 means counting Hawaii there’s 5 at large bids for Hawaii or teams below Hawaii.
Probably only Florida State University and Ohio State University maybe improve their RPI to jump ahead of Hawaii.
Still leaving at large bids available for Hawaii.

Sorry forgot about the B East still have there conference champion to dtermine, 68 Villanova 54 Butler 32 Marquette and 16 Creighton involved. One will be automatic qualifier. If Marquette beats Butler then Market will probably get an at-large bid already accounted for in my convoluted calculations.

It’s been a good day for Hawaii WVB, overall. I think their at-large chances improved. I’m largely on the same page with Warriorfan and Optimist. I lost the thread a bit on Optimist’s analysis, but I think we wind up in about the same place.

    Today’s good results for Hawaii:
    – Syracuse (114) over Notre Dame (35)
    – Georgia (62) over LSU (38)
    – Duke (RPI 92) over NC State (41)
    – Illinois (28) over Iowa (46)
    – Ohio St. (42) over Maryland (47) [kept Maryland from moving up, while Ohio St. still has to beat Illinois (28) to finish above .500]
    – Florida (2) over Auburn (49)
    – UCLA (24) over Oregon St. (27) [keeps Oregon St. out of the top 25, which hurts North Texas (52)]
    – Wake Forest (182) over North Carolina (60)

Today’s results that work against Hawaii:
    – Washington St. (37) over ASU (138)
    – Florida St. (40) over Clemson (260)
    – Stanford (5) over Utah (13)

The rest of today’s results I see as neutral or minor, w/o much discernible impact.

Going into today’s matches I had the RPI ‘max scrutiny’ line at 43/44. Non-AQ teams right at that line would be at about 50/50 odds for making the at-large cut, all else being equal. For non-AQ teams with RPI better than RPI 43, the odds of an at-large improve quickly. South of the max scrutiny line, the odds of an at-large quickly go down. South of RPI 52, there is little to no chance.

Reality will vary of course. There are still important matches to be played that can impact Hawaii’s chances. But, today was good day for the Wahine. I hope they are going hard in practice.

  7. Warriorfan November 22, 2017 8:22 pm

Rpi futures has the wahine staying put at 39 but it would be nice to move up a spot or two.
What I am really hoping for is that Baylor beats Texas to make the wahines one big win look shinier and that Ohio State is eliminated and that no bid stealer takes the Missouri Valley or Big East tournaments. Florida state losing would be nice too.

Thanks to all the commenters for making this easier for us fans. The scores and breakdown seriously help people like me keep up, and the knowledge here is up there with any volleyball forum I’ve been to, so yeah..it’s looking better for the ‘Bows, but fingers still crossed!

  9. Optimist November 22, 2017 11:30 pm

Sorry, forgot 52 North Texas. They had previously lost to 29 Western Kentucky in their conference championship match and have no more games left, therefore it is hard to see then moving past Hawaii at 39.In the Missouri Valley Conference Championship, 44 Missouri State, 48 UNI have first-round byes. The four teams in the first round have RPIs of 175, 95, 244, 122.
If Missouri State and/or UNI lose their semifinal match, they would lose to one of those 4 teams with poor RPIs and be done. If only one of them makes it to the final and lose, again they would lose to a team with a for RPI and finish with one additional win and one additional loss to teams with poor RPIs. And I stated prior if they play each other in the championship match, one wins the AQ and the other loses. In the scenarios it ishard to see the non-qualifier passing Hawaii in the RPI.
