Warrior Beat: Rolo Effect

What was talked about for a while became a reality when Nick Rolovich agreed to a two-year contract extension that will run at least through the 2022 season. Here’s what it means:

> Security: Rolo likes UH. UH likes Rolo. It made sense to lengthen a contract that was set to expire at the end of the 2020 season. A fifth year — 2023 — will automatically trigger if the Warriors qualify for a bowl in 2019 or 2020. Rolo gets security of essentially a four- or five-year deal. Because this is an extension instead of a new contract, UH gets to keep Rolo under the financial range of the initial contract he signed in 2016.

> Wiggle room: As columnist Ferd Lewis notes, Rolo gets some cushion against brutal scheduling the next two seasons. This year, the Warriors play three Pac-12 schools. Next year, it’s another three Pac-12 schools, with two of the games on the road. A coach shouldn’t be punished for playing a daunting schedule against wealthier opponents. He won’t.

> Leverage: The extra year will be much earned if the Warriors manage to qualify for a bowl against the next two challenging schedules. But let’s suppose the Warriors don’t reach a bowl the next two seasons, but then go bowling in 2021 and 2022. That would give Rolovich more bargaining power.

> Support: The recent signees were pleased that Rolovich will be their coach through their entire UH career. That continuity is important to them.

> Matlin method: If anything, athletic director David Matlin is consistent. Last year, Matlin awarded contract extensions to volleyball’s Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, basketball’s Eran Ganot and baseball’s Mike Trapasso.

This should help out with recruiting.

    Three Pac-12 schools and Army.

Army is the second best non-conference team Hawaii will face.

The ESPN Way-Too-Early Poll has Washington slated at #16 and Army at #25.

Thank you Mr. Matlin. Trust. The program is definitely heading in the right direction. Hard to believe the potential now. Almost there. Just a matter of time (and evolution). Terrific.

Odd, the numbers were not initially released as they will ultimately be made public at some point…..

    Howzit Everybody,

    Congrats Braddah Rolo.

Now it’s time to take the next step #phase2. If gotta bring out the wooden spoon and the rubbah slippah. Then bring um out. Hard work and discipline. That’s all need.

Also good luck in recruiting. Go get’um no sked’um.

    Mahaloz

Gotta keep the coaching staff together also. Going take da ohana (staff) to continue to build the hale.

Matlin said there are things that need to be finalized before he is even allowed to comment publicly on whether Rolo received a raise.

Congratulations Coac Rolovich on your contract extension.

Ahhhh, the ole agreement in principle…..

Ok, good continuity and consistency. However, is UH going to get out of possible criticism of “cronyism”? Well see what kind of adjustments will be made in the coming months before season starts. 4th year already.

  13. winning January 9, 2019 11:31 am

Yup Bama looked like UH in the Aloha Bowl. They looked flat and unmotivated. Tua looked hampered when trying to run. Next season he should be better as well as UH?

Awesome! Now got to keep the coaching staff together. I never realized that Alabama had a lot of coaching turnover in the past 5 years or so, while Clemson lost only 2 coaches in the Dabo Swinney era. Factory vs. Family…

    #14.

Maybe Jalen will link up with Lame Kiffin.

or, if he “got along” with his OC, go with Locksley to Maryland.

    just my 2 centavos.

Got to have the June Jones mentality. Play anyone, anywhere, any time. UCLA was terrified to schedule us back then for fear of losing. Hopefully next year we can give a couple of pac12 teams some rubs since we’ll have so many returning starters.

  18. Boolakanaka January 9, 2019 12:35 pm

Hmmmn, as to Hurt, I would not be surprised to see him consider Udub or Penn State —-why? Both teams had senior QBs, are in solid conferences and have very respected QB coaches.

  19. hilorain January 9, 2019 1:02 pm

Hopefully, part of the extension is an increase in Asst Coach $$$$. In lieu of a raise, hope Rolo is getting more $$$ for his staff. Low Asst Coach salary is reason we keep losing coaches.

  20. suckkabooya January 9, 2019 1:04 pm

Houston and Arizona are betting line front runners for Hurts’ transfer. If he goes to Arizona that week zero game will be 40000+. Lots of story lines there. UH can shock the world that day. Batoon can elevate his status immediately with a good performance.

  21. NorthShoreFan January 9, 2019 1:10 pm

football…total team sport….can have the best QB but if the o-line isn’t that good…so so results. Bama got exposed..results so so.
Tiger d managed to put pressure on and it showed in the results.
Bama got a QB competition next year?

  22. NorthShoreFan January 9, 2019 1:11 pm

pAC 12 could be a good option.

  23. ai-eee-soos January 9, 2019 1:24 pm

    # 21.

Taulia is supposed to enroll. Maybe he will redshirt.

Don’t know about the other QB’s, but last season, there was at least

one hot shot along side Tua. Don’t know if he is still there.

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid January 9, 2019 3:26 pm

Great news! Rolo good here, here Rolo good! Glad he’s going to be around to continue building the program.

  25. iGrokSpock January 9, 2019 3:31 pm

And Rolo just keeps on rolling!

  26. Akamai Okole January 9, 2019 4:20 pm

Rolo is the Rolo…the game is how you lay ’em down and wen (win)

    Pass/No pass…Come/No Come.

    Some guys really like dat…

  27. cappie the dog January 9, 2019 4:38 pm

    17.

    Texas.

  28. cappie the dog January 9, 2019 4:59 pm

If you add an extra tier to the Football Playoffs, Clemson would have played 16 games.

    Isn’t that kind of high?

  29. suckkabooya January 9, 2019 5:00 pm

    Please go to Arizona.

If Hurts goes there that is a definite omen… For UH. The origin of something divine perhaps. Divine. Weird (should he choose Arizona) if you think about it. Magical Season? All the pieces (returning roster, recruited speed, ideal schedule, program vindication and a renewed contract) are starting to fall into place. So supernatural. Weird.

  30. Boolakanaka January 9, 2019 5:36 pm

I think he will end up at a Florida school..,
