Warrior Beat: Hoops opener approaches; football coaches searching for prospects
The basketball ‘Bows’ season-opening opponent — Portland — is scheduled to arrive in town this afternoon.
The Pilots return six of their top seven players from last year, including Marcus Shaver, a guard who has spent time in Hawaii and was a one-time UH recruit. (His father has a business here.)
Hugh Hogland is a 6-10 post player from ‘Iolani School.
The Rainbow Classic opens Friday, with North Texas and Humboldt State at 4:30 p.m. and UH and Portland at 7.

The UH football coaches have been evaluating prospects on the mainland this week. This is the recruiting period where coaches may chat with a prospect’s coaches, counselors and teachers on campus.
The Warriors are targeting some JC players who would be eligible to sign during the early period (Dec. 19-21).

Marcus Shaver was on the All-WCC Basketball Freshman team last season.
Humboldt St. used to play UH in football in the 1960’s and 70’s. They were ranked #3 in the AP Small College Poll in 1960. But they will discontinue their football program after this season.
I think they can win the Rebels. DB and their receivers are better. We have better receivers and DB. So that is the reason I feel we can win.
Going to my only Hawaii game his year when they play San Diego State. Can’t wait!
To me, UH and UNLV is a toss up. UH is favored because we are at home. UH has the better record overall but to me it means nothing.
Rolovich as UH coach has not beaten Tony Sanchez and UNLV the last 2 years, home and home. UNLV rung up 28 points against Utah State on the road. UH scored 17 points against Utah State at home.
UNLV has the better rushing attack, UH has the better passing attack. It will come down to a couple of key plays who wins this game. It might be an extra point, a field goal, a fumble, an interception. I see a 1 point game frankly. Maybe even an overtime game and anything can happen. UNLV is playing in San Diego State this week.
Prediction: If UNLV plays San Diego State tough and makes it close, win or lose, then I feel UNLV is the better team than UH. If UNLV gets blown out at San Diego, then UNLV will come in to Honolulu fired up to play hard to beat Hawaii because they know they can beat Hawaii. UH has not shown we can run the ball consistently. Our defense, both rushing and pass defense has been torched against good teams. UNLV can move the ball and score points. I’ll call it, UNLV 34, UH 33. I hope I’m wrong, but I just don’t have good vibes at the moment. I also see no bowl game. Again, I hope I’m wrong.

Just learned that our QB had a 103 degree fever last week; and Ursua was also sick missing a few days of practice. Could that be the reason why our offense didn’t perform well last Sat?
Our offense seems to be running the same handful of plays each game–where is the innovation or surprise factor to keep opposing defenses guessing?
We should do trick plays; flea flickers, utilize our WR’s who were former QB’s (like we did with Ursua on a 2 pt conversion); even hand the ball off to throw back to Cole? More swing passes to our speedy RB’s to match them one vs one against LB’s–this play against our defense works all the time; is it because we don’t run this play in practice???
Also why do we just do a straight QB draw–we should have Cole at least fake it to a RB on a RPO run option.
I am guessing even St Louis and Punahou have more trick plays right?
We should utilize Elijah Dale’s running ability in space more; how about we line him at WR and use him on WR screens? Or just a swing pass to him–that one swing pass to him late in the game at SJSU went for a crucial TD; he made a nice juke move vs a SJSU DB or LB on his way to his TD.
Or simple reverses or other mis-direction plays?
Have Moussa or Cordeiro each come in for a series with a scripted set of plays; preferably trick plays; to keep the crowds excited!
Our season has only 2 games left so let us not hold anything back–come on Rolo; do this for the fans; and the team also!

Buffs,saints and Mililani run there offense
with a lot of same plays..The difference with
Hawaii ..for some reasons they don’t exucute there Offense better than the opponents DEFEND it.Think it will take another year for
team(coaches including) to master the RnS

Umm, the difference is that St Louis, Punahou and Mililani are high school teams playing against high school defenses, got nothing to do with college football.
Unfortunately, I fear Rolo will do the same stuff as before and the offense will sputter again, plus the usual swiss cheese defense will make an appearance, then you have the creeping crud of loser mentality infecting the whole team, all resulting in a gut kicking loss to lowly UNLV and predictable end to the season, as SDSU will be a bloodbath.
Please, either put me out of my misery or do something fricken totally unexpected, like reach deep in your soul and come up with a really convincing win against UNLV, play well at SDSU, and blast your opponent in the Hawaii Bowl to salvage the season and your respect.

I agree with the post about the seeming lack of variety on offense the past few weeks. However, I have to say that installing a completely new scheme in one year never really happens. When new coaches come in at the collegiate level and are spectacular 9 times of 10 it’s because of their superior athletes.
The success of our offense early this year is the product of defensive coordinators up against an unknown and the shear talent of a handful of players.
The full scope of Rolo’s RnS 2.0 will not be seen until late next year, perhaps even the year after when scheme, coaching, and recruiting all mesh to define the offensive gameplan.
Earlier in the season, the running game seemed to be somewhat more varied as to the different plays that were run, including at least one option pitch and some sweeps outside the tackles, if I recall correctly. As many posters have already indicated, we now keep running the RPO straight up the middle. Not making use of the speed of Fred Holly, Elijah Dale and Miles Reed with the up the middle ploy. And not fooling the opponent’s defense either. No need for trick plays. What happened to the variety?

When you look at things objectively this is essentially year one for the rebuild of the program. Year one’s are usually not so good. With the change of the offensive system it may some time to expand the playbook past the “base package” of routes and runs. It also takes time to acquire (recruit) the right types of players specific for that system (defense too). Next year will be different. With the personnel (recruits from 2018) developing together on the scout team (defensive guys are being developed on field) the looks will be so different. Maybe “unrecognizable”. Will force defenses to readjust. Next year they will have more “answers” installed and ready to counter different looks (defense too). Just takes time. This is year one. This is what “we’ve” always wanted, The Jones era “rebirth”. It’s coming. You can see it.
Remember the 1st year of the Spread in 87 under Wags & Paul Johnson = 5-7 season. Took a year to get that offense running on all cylinders. The 9-4 in 99 was great, but tempered by the 3-9 season in 2000. I also recall UH getting pounded by Fresno & Boise by 70-14 & 69-14 under Jones.

04 team upset NW and MSU to go to win a Hawai’i bowl vs UAB. Totally different this year. June turned that team around. Who we beat this year? Can we stop the skid?
Dan Hawkins called a fake punt on Hawaii when the game was out of reach.
