Warrior Beat: Basketball ‘Bows to play North Carolina in 2020
The Hawaii basketball team has reached an agreement to play North Carolina on Nov. 20, 2020 in the Stan Sheriff Center.
It will be the first meeting between the teams since 2016, when the game drew a capacity crowd in Manoa. The Tar Heels won that Nov. 18 matchup 83-68 en route to the Maui Invitational.
“It’s awesome,” UH coach Eran Ganot said. “It’s exciting on a lot of different levels to bring in a really good team in our arena in front of our fans. You’re talking about a national program, great coach (Roy Williams). They’re good every year. They’re national championship contenders every year.”
The Rainbow Warriors will offer a preview of this season’s team with tomorrow’s exhibition against Hawaii Pacific in the SSC.

Probably means UNC is playing in the Maui Invitational in 2020. Can’t imagine UNC coming all the way to Hawaii to play one road game. Regardless, I’m glad that Hawaii was able to grab this matchup against one of the greatest basketball programs in the NCAA!
Mr. A-House, Rolo is thinking light years ahead of us lowly bloggers. Just remember that certain things like running up the middle cannot be totally abandoned. If the enemy knows you won’t attack a certain area they won’t defend it and it makes it harder to attack other areas. Isn’t that basic military tactics?

#5….its probably like the case the UNC is going to be in the Maui Invitational but maybe there is a home and home with UNC in the future. You never know.
Ganot and Williams seems to have a very good relationship and I would not put it pass Williams to do something nice for Ganot and come here only for one game. Keep in mind that teams coming to Hawaii to play can play an extra game so for UNC, they can come out here play UH and still have a full slate of games on their schedule. UH will probably pay for everything and maybe even pay an appearance fee for UNC so its a good deal for UNC anyway.
According to one source, North Carolina lists the Maui Invitational on its 2020-21 schedule.
Props for Roy Williams and UNC for having the balls to play UH on their way there. Most team would turn down the chance due to what happened to Michigan State a few years ago.
North Carolina should be fully recovered by then from the harsh penalties imposed on them from the NCAA due to the bogus classes their athletes were taking. And besides, Roy didn’t even know that learning how to pound poi wasn’t even a class. He loves a good luau!
Vegas has pegged Hawaii as a 20 point underdog with the average money line bet at Hawaii -1000(bet 1 bill on HI to win 10). That translates to a one in ten chance to win.
There’s good reasons for those odds many of which posters have pointed out – lack of talent, lack of depth, inexperience, schemes, play calling, physical and mental fatigue from playing 10 straight games with 5 of them on the road, coaching decisions, etc. , etc. etc……..
The one thing I like about football is that while all these things may apply to your team there’s always a chance that the stars align and your team finds a way to win a game that they’re heavy underdogs.
Hopefully this is the game that’s that one in ten chance…..

I’m always one that says get chance, but the reality is UH will probably lose by more than 20. Utah State is the real deal. They can score quick and fast. As we saw in the Fresno game, games can change in an instant and it’s not far fetched to find ourselves multiple touchdowns behind in a manner of minutes

That piece Jay Bilas wrote on North Carolina agreeing with the NCAA ruling drove me out of my mind. I think Andy Katz was more mid-major friendly. Guys like Bilas, Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler are so biased towards the Power 5.

I can’t remember if you were the other guy who protested the appearance of LH during spring practice.
The idea of Utah State playing a major poll terrifies the gatekeepers.
They won’t draw a national audience, bring enough people, and you have to work around their schedule.
This is why they were completely left off the initial College Football Playoff rankings.
They deserved to be ranked.
We all thought McDon was the next Colt but he has a long way to go. He has got to work on things that may not be attainable for him – VISION. Cant coach that. However, we do have potentially a very good reserve of QB’s. Also, they should be able to recruit better this coming year as the coaches will have had a year under their belt. Making it to the Aloha Bowl will be a welcome bonus for them-incentive for next year and beyond. One more thing, seems hardly any audibles are called- lack of recognition of defensive alignments? Seems some coaches lack that VISON as well. Gotta make changes quick!

Borden entered this season as a three-time academic all-Mountain West selection.
The formal announcement of the 2018 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation’s press conference in New York City on December 4.

Update: making the Hawai’i Bowl
If Utah State is so explosive offensively, then what UH need to do is do what option teams do…..that is limit the amount of time they touch the ball. UH should try and control the clock with running, short passes and ball control. Worst case scenarios are 3 and outs with little time running off the clock.
We got to limit their possessions, we need to score points ourselves while controlling the clock and maybe hope for Utah State to make a mistake or two so we can capitalize on them.
If we going into the game with a mindset that we going be in a shootout with them, its going to get ugly.
UH is a RnS team and their philosophy is supposed to allow them to score lots of point, HOWEVER, if you cannot match up with your opponent talent-wise/speedwise, it would be unwise to try and go toe to toe with them.
We got to play smart and making them work as opposed to giving them easy points by going three and outs and going for fourth downs in our own territory. Rolo and team just got to throw out that gambling mentality and go with the percentages.
Hope Hawaii starts winning so I don’t have to listens to horrible preseason predictions for the team next year.

This is supposed to be a quick-hitting offense.
I think if Hawaii plays it safe and tries to control the clock with predictable running plays, you’re conceding defeat before the whistle sounds.
For this one game, start the QB who can best elude the sack.
Hawaii needs to pass on all downs.
If they’re going to lose, go deep into the playbook and go down slinging the ball all over the field.
Utah State quarterback is 6-4.
Jordan Love. His receivers is 6-3. It will be battle of the offense. With one team having a junk defense. Guess who?
Rolo needs to make a decision to go all in with the R&S, he is still playing multiple offenses with incorporating the RPO. Too much influence from Chris Ault with the pistol. Let’s just throw the ball like JJ did with true R&S. Go Warriors!

Yup, I wish Coach would have more trust for the pass setting up the run like traditional run and shoot. RPO seems to be bogging up the offensive rhythm. There was such a “smoothness” first three games. Rhythmic. Now it looks like Cole is “aiming” at receivers instead of letting the rhythm dictate his throws (after the pass read in RPO). Plus Coach alluded as much as far as O-line is concerned. Seems “read blocking” is irritating to them. More designed running plays so they (the O-line) can “hit” somebody. Just got to find that “niche” within the system and evolve from there. Evolution. A wonderful process.
I wish Gonzaga had beaten North Carolina.
I felt as if the soul of college athletics was at stake.
At the time, the NCAA were still months away from a ruling on their “investigation”, but I thought North Carolina should have disciplined themselves and bow out of the tournament voluntarily.

I disagree with you. I think Rolo’s version of the offense can be more effective than the pure pass RnS that June had if executed correctly. Back in the old RnS days, Hawaii was quite stoppable as long as the defense could get pressure on the QB like in the Sugar Bowl. Making the offense more diverse with a run and QB option element just makes more dimensions of the offense that the defense has to worry about. The offense this year is still learning. It will take time.
With this full year of R&S experience under their belts, Warriors offense will take off next year, no matter what kind of defensive coverage gets thrown out at them.
Kudos to the Men’s B-Ball schedulers for signing UNC to play in 2020. A sell out for sure.
Matt Owies to play Australian football. He had played mbb for UH, then sat out last season at Seattle.

You’re right. Too premature to deem RPO hybrid so unfavorable. When it does “evolve” and become more polished it will have the potential to “shorten” the game and keep the score closer when they are overmatched like against Georgia. But right now though is does seem a little inefficient and “idealistic”, especially with the mounting pressure to win just one more game. Good point. I never really thought about that aspect.
Ahh, you guys have to realize that we don’t have enough talent and speed. We have some but not enough! Cannot squeeze blood out of stone. Plus, we need more experience on our “O” coaching, not enough VISION. Like I said before bring the Mouse to Hawaii.
In retrospect, that 2007 Sugar Bowl fiasco was partly due to our QB having some off field problems. He was totally out of it. Think JJ stayed with him too long! Plus like I’ve said before there were 5 offsides that resulted in big plays that the refs did not call and were penalized.
Hard to get enough talent and speed to compete with the likes of the Top Ten such as 2007 Georgia. Can still be competitive (against power 5’s) with this offensive system though. For sure. The 2006 running backs would have taken care of that edge rusher “offsides” and all. UH will get their chance to play on New Year’s Day again soon enough. This is just “the beginning”. Can do.

It’s only the first season of this offense. I think the offense has done pretty well overall. We are only seeing them struggle lately once they got to the more difficult part of the schedule. The team needs more depth and talent for sure. I think next year with more time and experience with eachother, the offense will hopefully be more efficient.

The O-lne wasn’t protecting either. The defense got to the QB way too often and the offense couldn’t do anything.
