Warrior Beat: In the bag

Stan Gaudion has created a comfortable travel routine. / Photo by Stephen Tsai

Punter Stan Gaudion shares with the Warrior Beat his must-have list for road trips:

> “First thing I take is deodorant because the long flight, you get pretty smelly.”

> “I always take two toothbrushes. I put one in (kicker Ryan) Meskell‘s bag and on in my bag. In case they lose my bag, I still have another toothbrush.”

> “I take a lot of stuff to roll out and stretch in the hotel. To keep flexible, I take a roller and a softball. It’s like self-massage because we’re on the plane so long.”

> “I always take a couple of … (chocolate) peanut butter cups because we never had them in Australia. It’s a good excuse to eat them on the airplane.”

> “I also take those Hawaiian macadamia nuts. They’re essential.”

> “Funny enough, as prepared as I am, I always forget my (phone) charger. I use Meskell’s.”

> “I bring a laptop to keep up with school work. All my teachers are really good. … They allow me to do the work when we’re on the road.”

> “I watch ‘Dark Knight Rises’ every flight. It’s the one with Bane. I kind of watch the first 30 minutes on the plane, and then I fall asleep every time. It’s the best 30 minutes for a movie you’ll ever see.”

Best of luck to the Warriors! Bring home the “W”

Off topic, but homelessness is a problem everywhere, even at SJSU.

interesting that the last 3 offers have been to JC WRers or was one to a HS player?

UH not satisfied with their “stock” of WR?

be interesting to see the 2nd and 3rd level receivers on the field and what they are capable of.

  5. Warrior Lifer September 28, 2018 10:31 am

    @A-House

Ty McCullouch is a WR who was offered by Hawaii 3 days ago, and he’s a c/o 2019 high schooler. Unless there were 3 more WRs who were offered by UH within the past few days.

  6. haka September 28, 2018 10:37 am

    A-House,
I think that you are always looking to better your quality and depth. They are also looking for receivers that fit the system. As with Byrd and Ward, you can never have enough receivers with shake and bake speed.

  7. Whitey September 28, 2018 10:45 am

Best to the Warriors and bring home the bacon.

  8. Inyoface September 28, 2018 11:05 am

Everyone on the team should have a pair of reusable soft foam ear plugs. They work great when traveling or not sleeping in your own bed and block out when others snore.

  9. Boolakanaka September 28, 2018 11:19 am

Hmmm, not staring a rumor or anything, but wouldn’t John Ursua be eligible for the NFL draft as a fifth-year senior? Given that he is already 23 or 24, and at the top of stats nationally for the second year in a row, it seems just as an exercise of prudence he would at the very very least consider his professional options after this season….

  10. suckkabooya September 28, 2018 11:22 am

I think there is more value in receivers than any other position in this offense. You can see it play out as opponents adjust. Ward is more of a slot hybrid and can be taken out of the game (“over the top” routes) by press coverage. He does eat up yards quick, real quick (without YAC though) on slants. And they still have difficulty figuring out the opposite wideout. Not being able to attack one on one outside coverage deep is totally “cramping” this offense. The JC recruits will address the immediate problem. Plus everybody good graduates next year so that too. Bright future here, you can see it. just missing a few parts.

    Boolakanaka – shhhhhhh

  12. suckkabooya September 28, 2018 11:35 am

If they can find that outside deep threat for next year then the opposing safeties will be f****** (like the Northwestern safety against Owens, too much space to cover). And going to be much easier to read for McDonald. Anyway, next year. Work out the kinks now because next year is the “Hot” year.

  13. Bowwar September 28, 2018 12:17 pm

What station/channel is showing the San Jose State game?

    It’s on Spectrum PPV. 1255.

This is what I tried to post the other day. If it doesn’t work,

will someone find it and post it. This WR looks like he fits right in

    for our system.

Where does Ursua rank among the great slots to Play for UH? If you could pick any two of Ursua, Davone, RGM, Salas, Pilares, Owens, Sydner, who’d you pick?

For me Owens is easily the best of that group and I’d pick Salas on the other side for his size and hands though Davone is a great choice as well. In my view RGM, Pilares and Ursua are essentially equivalent. Age aside, I’m not sure Ursua benefits from leaving early unless he goes CFL. He would tear up the CFL, though.

Oh, and apologies to Dane McArthur, Coach Stutz, etc. who were very good, but not in the same class as the others in my opinion.

burro sabio- I don’t want Ivin Jasper as head coach now. I’m all in with Chris Hayes, I mean, Nick Rolovich. I was having an emotional meltdown in 2010. Because I thought it was already firmly established that the pro set was a bust.

  42. A-House September 29, 2018 9:53 am

reading Ferd’s column this morning left me with the distinct impression that UH coaches and players are satisfied to play in the Hawaii Bowl — if this is correct, it’s most disappointing as they are much better than that

play to qualify for a bowl game on the mainland — surely, the Warrior faithful will show up — former players, students, parents, other family, former Hawaii residents, etc!

will there be a win today?

    A-House

This year Hawaii Bowl for sure, anything else is gravy. But next year is the year. Make sure we all save vacation time because a lot of Bowl games are going to beg for UH’s services. Be ready everyone.
