UH close to hiring new coaches
The Warriors are getting close to filling the three coaching vacancies — offensive line, defensive line and receivers.
At the American Football Coaches Association’s convention this past week in North Carolina, Nick Rolovich interviewed eight defensive line coaches on Monday and six O-line coaches on Tuesday.
Rolovich termed it a “great convention.”

A-house from the previous post, Banker is AHC and LB. Batoon has only been listed as DC, and with a 10th coach, it could be that he doesn’t have to coach a position. But nothing’s been announced (although maybe soon), so I guess we’ll just have to stay tuned.

I thought Rolo was going to change the coach staff’s roles. I see the returning coaches coaching the same positions.
Our offense resembled the new helmets and current uniforms. Dull and boring.
Our special teams was REALLY bad in all phases. I hope they can learn from Banker and not rely on the old bread like last year.
At least Batoon and Banker bring fresh air and wealth of experience to the defense

and totally agree with all who posted that “special teams” play in 2017 was nearly awful – really awful — especially the punting — and Rigo did make a huge difference in 2016 and now free agent punter for Indy ( is this correct? )
Special teams was not all awful. They blocked some kicks I think and no big punt returns.

From a coaching perspective, criticism is part of the playing field. Win or go home. It’s performance based for sure, but sometimes it takes some understanding and time. Take the hiring process for Coach Rolo in completing his staff. He’s not in a position to call his first choice and say, “How much you like brah?”. It’s a lot easier to fill a position when you have the money. Everyone wants the big fish, but not everyone has a boat. Make a hasty choice that doesn’t work out and everyone questions your judgement. Take too long and everyone questions your ability to close the deal. Either way, “No can win.”. Coach Banker and Coach Batoon, on paper, seem to be great hires and I am sure they are helping with the remaining hires. Hires that will be named very soon I am sure. Will it all work out? Only time will tell who will be the catch of the day.

i have to agree with the prior comments today and before regarding this past season’s offense. Friends and relatives who are long time season ticket holders have all complained that the offense was too predictable and boring there needs to be a new offensive attitude and schemes that will help to rejuvenate the team as well as the fans. The fans will lose interest if the offense is too predictable. They want to see different plays even if they don’t always work. Change the players if necessary. Sometimes the interest of the fans need to be considered. After all, who helps to pay the bills. I am not one to complain. However this has been on my mind and I am reminded of it when I talk to some others who are at each and every game.
irks me how people use “mullah” instead of “moolah” when talking about the slang term for money. A mullah is a muslim teacher.
Is this the same guy who used to coach here?
Cincinnati Bengals: The organization has announced
Daronte Jones as cornerbacks coach.
UH Special teams tied for 6th in NCAA Div I with 5 blocked kicks this past season.
Punt return defense was 70th out of 129 teams, allowing 7.4 yds per punt return. No punt return TD’s allowed ( 58 total punts).
2 kickoff return TD’s allowed.
All in all, UH boys played with what God given talents they had.
Statistics prove that. It just sad that not enough wins resulted.
Penalties. Bad refereeing. The other team played better.
The other coaches out coached us. And then that on side kick
that no one expected except all of us and Bobby Curran and staff.
Snow sissies. I remember riding on a team bus in a blizzard heading to a town as a member of our high school basketball team in Wisconsin, with coach driving an old stick shift bus. We asked him
how he could see the road. He said as long as he could see the telephone poles, we should be ok…
Eventually, we spun around but never turned over or into a ditch–because at the time our chaplain was leading us in The Lord’s Prayer.

That’s him! Prior to being hired at Cincinnati, he was coaching the Miami Dolphins secondary. Before that, he spent a season with the Wisconsin Badgers. Glad to see he’s moving on up.
Is handing off the ball and throwing into the flats boring? Any QB could do that if running wasn’t an option.
There is one terrific Defensive coordinator Hawaii has ever had – Bob Wagner who was the DC under Hawaii Rainbow head coach Dick Tomey. Since Bob Wagner, all the Hawaii football DCs were failures.
One year we could not stop the end runs. Other years no pressure on the opponent QBs. Our Warrior football defense has been soooobad that even during game time the opponent will always go on 4th down, for a few yards or 10 yards for a first down. They know Hawaii had a very poor defense.
Will all see what the new Defensive Coordinator whoever that be, can do to change that….
New coaches will bring positives changes. I was guilty of always leaving during 3rd quarter.

I read here all the talk about how bad our offense/defense/special teams have always been. REALLY?? I actually remember some very good teams in each aspect of the game. But then, my memory isn’t the greatest.
I’m not a die hard fan anymore. What I mean is my week used to be very good, or very bad, depending on how UH played the previous game. I would grumble all week, or until the next game. I finally realized that I didn’t get to have any control over how they played, so I let go of the frustration and directed more attention to the things in my life that I have more control over. I realized that the players are full-time students and part-time football players. And they seemed to be doing the best they could. And none of the coaches wanted to lose, so I figured they did the best they could too. Doesn’t mean I always agreed with them but I remembered 2 things: I don’t know what they know so it’s hard for me to second guess their decisions, and they are human and can also make mistakes.
This blog is a place where all are allowed and encouraged to express their opinions, and I hope it stays that way. But some of you are such “negative nellie’s” when you suspect things won’t be done the way you think they should. How many of you really predicted and expected the team to do as well as they did Rolo’s first season? I know we all hoped for it, but how many really believed it ahead of the season? The point, maybe support and encourage rather than being critical. And be willing to be surprised how well they do.
And about the offense being boring and demanding a change. I suspect almost all fans would care less about the play selection if it is working. I liked JJ’s offense, but I also liked Tomey’s and Wagner’s. I like it if it works. I’d rather have a “boring” win than an “exciting” loss any day.
Wagner’s offense was no where near boring.
Once coach Rolovich resolves the offensive line issues (O line coach, Depth) we’ll need a much bigger bandwagon. Especially if he gets a home run hire and another good sized recruit.

Year Two brought with it a full season of game film for oppo research and untimely injuries that exposed the lack of depth and eliminated the benefits of smoke and mirrors.
Where does depth help/hurt the most? Special teams.

I remember UH fans calling for Paul Johnson to resign or be canned when he was OC (too many running plays). Fans used to yell stuff at him when he and the other UH coaches would go up to the press box before and after games. Once, when a fan yelled at him to leave UH, Johnson calmly turned and replied, “Maybe I will.” He later left to take the OC job at Navy.
Sometimes, UH fans don’t know what they want.
